Position Title: Adult English as Second Language (ESL) Instructor (Part-Time)

SUMMARY
This position is responsible for providing instruction on basic English skills and Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education to classes and individual students in the adult education program.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Program/Department
- Assist the Director of Adult Education in carrying out the mission and vision.
- Assist in guiding students with an emphasis on maximum progress of participants and successful transition to the next level with the goal of entering post-secondary education or the workplace.
- Provide instruction on basic English skills such as listening, reading, writing, speaking, and pronunciation to classes and individual students in the adult education program.
- Collaboratively design curriculum which includes English literacy, Civics, life skills, vocational/workplace English, digital literacy.
- Recruit (Create community awareness of the program), test, and register students while maintaining necessary documentation for registered students in a student file.
- Attend Adult Ed staff meetings.
- Facilitate curriculum which includes not only English literacy and Civics, but also life skills, vocational/workplace English and parenting.
- Plan extended education opportunities approved by the Director of Adult Education.
- Participate in class field trips.
- Follow the student handbook and policies and understand the current year Provider Manual.
- Monitor and coordinate online curriculum usage in Burlington English.
- Evaluate student progress and record data (Student Achievement form, Student goal management form).
- Maintain an up to date student file on each student and ensure that information is entered in DAISI.
- Administer pre and post-tests (CASAS) according to the assessment guidelines.
- Record attendance, instruction hours, and test results in a weekly (Friday), if not daily, in the ESL Book and DAISI.
- Attend training and conferences as approved by the Director of Adult Education and record in Adult Ed Book, Instructor Folder, and DAISI.
- Refer students to community agencies according to their needs, including CSC, HSE, WIOA, as well as ROE #33 services including tutoring, family literacy, etc.
- Collaborate with Director of Adult Education for Instructional Coaching
- Keep the classroom and materials clean and organized.
- Assist the Bridge Coordinator to refer students to community agencies according to their needs. - Agencies include CSC (Carl Sandburg College), HSE (High School Equivalency) , WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act).
- Communicate regularly with the Director of Adult Education, RAES staff, Early Childhood/Family Literacy staff.
- Work with the Family Literacy Coordinator in providing parenting education.
- Assist and collaborate with retention of ALL students. Communicate with students to ensure student’s minimum hours (40) are reached (student retention).
- Be a motivator and professional relationship builder with students to aspire them to the next level.
- Assist the AVL (Adult Volunteer Literacy) Coordinator in providing additional tutoring for students as needed.
- Participate in writing grants for Adult Ed programs and other student-family support programs
- Meet regularly with the Director of Adult Education and attend team meetings, professional development opportunities as approved.
- Assist with public relations for Adult Ed: newsletters, press releases, community communications, etc.
- Attend and acquire a minimum 12 hours per year of Professional Development related to education, Adult Education, or attend relevant training and conferences as approved by the Director of ROE Services.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the Director of Adult Education.
Regional Office of Education
- Maintain updated Google Calendar.
- Complete all required employee documents in an accurate & timely manner per ROE, State, and other grant requirements.
- Practice high ethical standards and maintain confidentiality.
- Engage in Professional Development per ROE/position requirements.
- Follow and enforce all State, Federal, and ROE guidelines and policies in a professional manner.
- Maintain turnover files (ROE#33 Purple Binder).
- Attend all ROE and program meetings as required by supervisor.
- Join and participate in a ROE Committee, including attendance and engagement at meetings.

- Perform other duties as assigned by Regional Superintendent of Schools or Assistant Regional Superintendent of Schools.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, & CRITICAL SKILLS
- Professional Educators License with ESL endorsement, preferred or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
- Competence in utilizing Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Virtual Meeting Platforms
- Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.
- Ability to push/pull up to 10 lbs.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and an acceptable/courteous manner.
- Understanding and awareness of multicultural needs
- Ability to maintain a positive and collaborative relationship/attitude across all ROE programs.
SCHEDULING
Smithfield - The work hours for this position will be subject to the shift times to enable students to participate in class prior to their regularly scheduled shift, or as approved and assigned by the Director of Adult Education.
Job Types: Part-time, Contract
Salary: $24.15 per hour
