Infrastructure Services Specialist

Purpose: Coordination of the day-to-day operations of the academic computing and network environment and provide technical support with applications, hardware, and the network.

Classification: Mid-Management, Non-Exempt/Non-Bargaining Unit
Level: III
Supervises: Student Workers or Interns
Reports To: Director of Technology Services and Information Security
Principal Working Relationships: Faculty, Staff, and Students

Major Responsibilities 

  1. Lead the maintenance and operation of academic computing facilities throughout the district in consultation with the Deans, Associate Deans, Directors, Faculty and Staff. 
  2. Lead the provision of technology, server and network support for all College locations.
  3. Keep suitable and complete documentation of all activities related to hardware/software maintenance, upgrades, repairs, configurations and physical inventory relevant to all components of academic computing facilities.
  4. Lead the implementation of upgrades, software and hardware, as needed on all servers and workstations for all campuses.
  5. Recommend hardware and software upgrades for the network, servers and workstations; maintaining inventory of all servers, software and network related equipment.
  6. Serve as the technical contact in the management of all servers, network infrastructure and related equipment on all campuses.
  7. Continuously build a knowledge of networking, Internet, hardware and software.
  8. Responsible for the backup procedures on all servers and network equipment according to an established backup routine.
  9. Maintain and monitor institution email backup system, to include firmware upgrades and SMTP connection to Office 365.
  10. Configure network clients, printers and other hardware.
  11. Maintain the neat and orderly appearance of academic computing facilities.
  12. Maintain endpoint protection services through Checkpoint console for all Staff/Faculty workstations and laptops.
  13. Maintain and monitor both server and desktop virtualization environment via VMware.
  14. Participate in the establishment of strategic initiatives and the assessment of the department’s key performance indicators.
  15. Other duties as assigned.
Assists With 
  1. Acquisition of hardware and software for instructional computer facilities.
  2. Workshops and seminars on a variety of hardware and software programs including Microsoft Applications, Open LMS (Moodle) and other Software Applications.
  3. Assist Information Technology team members when needed.
  4. Assist with departmental assessment and establishment of key performance indicators based on the strategic plan.
Risk Management and Loss Prevention Activities 
  1. Actively participate in and carry out activities in support of the college’s Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position.
  2. Monitor conditions, events, and circumstances present in the college operation to avoid potential torts or injuries to students, staff, or the general public, and then communicate observations to the appropriate supervisor and/or Risk Management Committee.
  3. Assist with backup procedures for protection of data.
  4. Maintain a working knowledge of the college’s emergency procedures and how to operate emergency phone systems; including internal/external call boxes.
Minimum Necessary Skills, Experience, and Educational Background 
  1. Associate Degree or 60 hours of college related specialized training and two years related experience required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  2. Experience in LAN, the operation and maintenance of microcomputer hardware and knowledge of microcomputer application software required.
  3. Knowledge of Windows and Novell Networking Systems.
  4. Valid driver’s license.
  5. The ability to communicate successfully with clients of all ages, socio- economic status, sex or race.
  6. Spanish or French proficiency preferred.
  7. Some evening and/or weekend work and travel may be required. 
Physical Requirements to Perform Job Functions 
  1. Basic dexterity skills (computer work, telephoning).
  2. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and ability to place work orders for anything over that limit.
  3. Must be able to climb ladder and use hand tools.
