Central Iowa KFC, Inc. Restaurants Donate 7,209 Pounds Of Food Through Harvest Program
[Galesburg, Illinois] – [March 11, 2019]—Today, Central Iowa KFC, Inc. announced its Galesburg restaurants donated 7,209 pounds of food (32,623 pounds company-wide) to two charities in Galesburg during 2018 through the Harvest Food Donation program. The Salvation Army and Galesburg Rescue Mission repurposed the donated food to create protein- and nutrient-rich meals for people in need across the city of Galesburg.
“In 2018, through our Harvest program, we were able to provide meals to people in need within short distances from our restaurants,” said Michelle Hunt, Vice President of Central Iowa KFC, Inc. “We believe that simply redirecting unsold food to nonprofits like the two we donate to in Galesburg can make a tremendous impact right here in our community.”
40 million people live in food-insecure households across the nation, while 30-40 percent of all food produced is thrown away even though much of it is safe to eat. When participating in Harvest, KFC restaurant team members package unsold and wholesome food for donation. With assistance from Food Donation Connection (FDC), each restaurant is partnered with a local hunger relief organization that collects the surplus food each week to provide to those in need through commmunity feeding programs.
KFC joined Harvest, the world’s first prepared food donation program, 20 years ago in partnership with FDC to reduce food waste in restaurants and fight hunger across the nation. Since 1999, KFC has donated more than 80 million meals to over 3,500 nonprofits across the U.S. Learn more about the KFC Harvest program here.
