Downtown Traffic Advisory: South Prairie Street Road Closure
Galesburg, IL (April 29, 2026) -- S. Prairie Street is closed to all through traffic between E. Main and E. Simmons Streets to facilitate private façade repairs to the Weinberg Arcade building, located at the corner of Prairie and Simmons. The area of the closure is limited to the frontage of the Weinberg Arcade building. It is anticipated that S. Prairie Street will remain closed for approximately two months to complete repairs on the east side of the building. Once that work is finished, S. Prairie Street will reopen, and both lanes of the portion of E. Simmons Street adjacent to the building will close for approximately 1.5 months for work on the building’s south side.
Closure of both lanes of traffic, as well as the sidewalk nearest the building, is required for machinery access by the contractor, as well as the safety of motorists and pedestrians. To minimize disruption to residents and local businesses, the City has coordinated with the contractor to reopen the roadway every weekend when active construction is not taking place. Motorists can expect the roadway to open on Friday afternoons to provide traffic flow throughout the weekend before closing Monday mornings to resume work.
Access to public parking lots on the 100 and 200 blocks of E. Simmons Street will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. The City is committed to maintaining accessibility during the private building repairs, and appreciates the community's patience as the Weinberg Arcade, LLC, completes these necessary repairs to this historic corner.
