KNOX-GALESBURG SYMPHONY PRESENTS OPENING CONCERT OF THEIR 75 TH
SEASON: “A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC”
Conductor Maurice Cohn leads the orchestra in a program featuring Mozart, Rimsky-Korsakov,
and Gabriela Ortiz.
GALESBURG, IL — Galesburg native Maurice Cohn, currently Music Director of the West
Virginia Symphony, returns home to conduct the opening concert of the Knox-Galesburg
Symphony. The featured work for the evening will be Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, the
symphonic suite inspired by the story of a young woman who manages to save her own life by her
skillful weaving of spellbinding stories from the legendary collection of tales known as One
Thousand and One Nights (or “Arabian Nights”). The program will also include the first movement
of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, followed by Antrópolis written in 2019 by Mexican composer
Gabriela Ortiz. This piece is based on the composer’s personal memories of her visits to Mexico
City’s legendary dance halls and nightclubs (“antró”) with its high energy urban music and
nightlife.
